saltwater regions
The characteristics of saltwater regions are different to freshwater. Saltwater contains more then 50% salt.
Saltwater regions include: oceans, coral reefs and estuaries.
An ocean is the largest ecosystem in the world. Some animals/plants that live in the ocean are fish (tuna, whiting, etc.), whales, crabs, sharks, seaweed, dolphins, octopuses, lobsters, algae and fungi.
Coral reefs are found along the coast of continents (for example The Great Barrier Reef). Seaweed, reef sharks, starfish and smaller sized fish are just a few types of animals and plants that are found in a coral reef.
If a river/stream runs from/into an ocean, it is called as estuarie. Animals/plants that can be found in an estuarie are oysters, crabs and fish, just to name a few.
Food that is produced in saltwater regions are heaps of different types of fish (eg. salmon and tuna), shark, crab, lobster, oyster, seaweed, octopus, squid, scallops and fish oil. Fish is cooked into food after being caught. Fish can be caught off a pier or even a fishing trawler. Before the fish is cooked, it get prepared (skinned, boned, etc.). Sharks are caught off of a large fishing trawler. A shark also has to be prepared before being cooked. Sharks can be cooked into flake (how fish and chip shops do) or it could be cooked into shark fin soup. Chinese restaurants cook shark fin soup. Fishermen catch crabs, lobsters, squid and octopus aswell. Octopus can be turned into calamari.Scuba-divers go diving for oysters, scallops and seaweed. Seaweed is used for the outside of sushi. Seaweed grows from the energy of the sun.
Food production hasn't had a major impact on the saltwater region of the aquatic biome but it has had a minor impact. Overfishing has had a minor impact on this biome because when fishing trawlers come along, they take so many fish at once it means for a short amount of time not many fish in that area. It also makes a slight impact on the food chain.
There aren't any threats to food production in this area other then that fishing trawlers take a lot of fish (overfishing). The people who work on the fishing trawlers have to have a license. That license has a restriction on the amount of fish they are allowed to catch. The restriction needs to be lower to stop any threats of food production. If overfishing continues, some fish may become extinct in an area of the ocean.
